My Review:

I'm going to enjoy anything with K-9s working in it. This wasn't an exception other than it was amazing. The suspense and action just kept going! You can lose sleep reading this one. It can stand alone, but what a series this is. I loved that it had twists that I didn't see coming and as a former CIA agent, Amalia is just amazing. Micheal, wow what a character he is. What is God going to have to do to get through and change this situation? Faith and renewal of faith are good themes and I love the dogs and I definitely like this series!

Covert Danger was especially fun and challenging to write because it was the first time I’ve written a book with a heroine who is two people. At least, that’s what it seems like when you start to read Covert Danger.

Amalia Pérez is a security specialist at the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. She has two K-9 partners—Raksa, a German shepherd protection and search and rescue K-9, and Gaston, a Newfoundland water rescue dog.

Amalia doesn’t talk much about her past, even to her fellow co-workers at the Phoenix K-9 Agency. But her past comes crashing into her present in Covert Danger.

First, Michael Barrett shows up as a witness Amalia is assigned to protect. Trouble is, Michael is her former childhood best friend. And he knows she used to be someone else.

When an assassin arrives on the scene, gunning for Michael, another piece of Amalia’s secret past threatens to hijack her present. Because he’s an assassin that eluded her once before, on her last mission as a CIA operative.

So what is an author to do with a heroine who has two identities? A heroine who is determined her old self is gone forever?

Well, this author dug into the truth.

Thanks to years of running and years of deception before that, Amalia is buried in lies. As Michael points out to her, she doesn’t even know what the truth is anymore.

Sound familiar? Our culture is flooded with lies right now. Lies that grow more and more sinister as people abandon reason completely.

Rampant relativism—the “it’s true for me” mentality—has morphed into outright rejection of all real truth. Worse, it’s also turned into drastic efforts to pressure everyone to identify right as wrong and wrong as right.

Calling good evil and evil good is where we’ll all end up if we abandon the truth. Which is one reason why Amalia’s story—a search for truth and right amid deception and evil—is so important.

God taught me more about truth and deception as I took on the challenge of writing Amalia’s and Michael’s story. And He used this story to make my foundation in the truth stronger, strong enough to withstand the onslaught from our culture and from within.

 My Review: 

I'm a sucker for lighthouse stories and mysteries. Both of them together, here I am! Carson has done an amazing thing, he's purchased a lighthouse in Maine, to transform it into a B&B. (Bed and Breakfast) Now, he's not really trained in this, so when he and Abby meet, things start getting even more interesting. Sure, there's a sweet romance, but I was far more interested in the mystery and the renovation, and in what was happening to the lives of these characters. From fears and issues from 1945 to today, these folks find out just how great God's love is for us. I really liked this story and the only reason it's not five stars, is because I have some unanswered, but minor, questions.

She and her husband are lighthouse enthusiasts, have visited over 100 lighthouses and also served as volunteer lighthouse caretakers at Little River Light off the coast of Maine.

When not writing or visiting lighthouses, Marilyn enjoys reading, walking, boating, fishing, gardening, tennis, and playing with her golden retriever. She also sings in the choir at her church and leads a women’s Bible study group. Marilyn and her husband have a combined family of four sons, one daughter, and four grandsons. When I fell in love with lighthouses, I wanted to read all about them and see as many

in person as I could. Lighthouse Digest magazine was an answer to prayer. I inhaled every story in the magazine and used the information to write my lighthouse blog. https://pathwayheart.com/lighthouse/.

One blog post I wrote was about an opportunity to be a volunteer lighthouse keeper at a  lighthouse, such as the Little River Lighthouse in Cutler, Maine. When my brother read my blog post he suggested that my husband and I do it. It had never occurred to me that I could be one of those people I wrote about! My husband jumped on board the idea, so we filled out the application, along with character references and proof we could drive a boat, and we were selected! The next summer, we arrived in the tiny town of Cutler, Maine, for our 10-day stay, and  were met by the couple who arranged the lighthouse stays, who just happened to be the editors of Lighthouse Digest! I was awestruck.

They loaded us up in a boat in the harbor and took us out to the small island. We were charmed, and as a history buff, I was in heaven. The lighthouse and keepers’ house had been completely restored by a local non-profit organization which included a former Coast Guardsman who was once stationed there when the Coast Guard managed the property, as well as descendants of the last keeper family and the magazine editors.  Beforehand, the keepers’ house had been abandoned for years, and it took months of work to tear out the old and restore it to livable again. Notebooks with before and after pictures showed the extensive work they’d done.

Obviously, I could talk a long time about our experience on the island, but I’ll spare you. The point is, the story of Abigal’s Secret had its origin there, and I knew what Carson and Abby went through to restore the lighthouse property in the book.

My husband and I fell in love with Maine while we were there, so the story had to be set there among the many islands and lighthouses. Maine has the second most lighthouses in the United States (over 50). We also stayed in Bar Harbor a few days before we went to Cutler, so the town in the book is loosely based on Bar Harbor. (Cutler isn’t that big.)

And of course, being the historian that I am, I knew Abby had to be connected to the lighthouse and that she would discover how her own life was similar to her grandmother’s, who just happened to be the lighthouse keeper during World War II, another era in history that fascinates me.

 My Review: 

This is a different type of read, and my first by this author. My only issue was how it ended. Even with a second book coming, that was one abrupt halt for me, but still a worthy read. 

Angus Reid is now the sheriff of a horribly messed up, corrupted town. Just how deep does that evil go? Webs that include drugs, and all kinds of problems soon ensnare young Jacob. He was just trying to help his family's situation when he got sucked into all this. If that wasn't enough, we have all kinds of family drama, suspense, and just gobs of issues in general because it's a town full of broken and hurting people. In case you get tired of the suspense and drama, there's also mystery and a bit of romance as well, but this well is a deep one and even with a murder and so much happening, God is on the move. Faith isn't left out at all in this story and odds are good you will be waiting for book two so you can find out what else happens next. It's rather a mix of many genres, not the least of which is a Western with plenty of good vs. evil.

Many years ago God gave me a prophetic scripture through which He named me Hephzibah (meaning ‘My delight is in her’). Some time after that, life happened and for a long while I felt unworthy of that name.  But, God showed me grace in this area for the nearly ten years that followed and, although I never aspired to be a writer, I wrote my first ever book on a bucket list whim in December 2017. Somehow it evolved into a series, but, while writing the fifth book in my Alex Hunt adventure thriller series, I felt the Holy Spirit nudging and directing me into using my God-given talent for enhancing His Kingdom instead.  I obeyed and wrote the final book in that series, The Caiaphas Code, as my statement of faith before switching to writing Christian mystery and suspense instead.  Two days later, the idea for Every Good Gift was born and the day I finished writing the last sentence of this book, I heard the Lord whisper in my ear, Hephzibah, Hephzibah, over and over.  That has been the most noteworthy highlight of my short career so far: knowing that I have pleased God.

My heart and soul went into writing Jacob’s Well. I have three teenage sons, and raising them in a world filled with all kinds of temptation is not easy. They have to cope with so much more than we had to as kids: social media bullying, peer pressure to fit into a pretentious world that seems to intensify overnight, the lure of riches through online gaming or videos instead of education, to name but a few. But through the years, the pull of narcotics has remained the primary evil that threatens to destroy our children. I am blessed to have boys who aren’t scared to share their struggles with us and upon hearing a few of the stories about kids in their schools and our town, one of the main characters in Jacob’s Well was born. On the flip side, I have a mother’s heart and imagining what it would be like to watch your child go down the wrong path added in an entirely different element to the story, especially if that mother was a Christian. The spiritual and emotional battles that would rage within, the helplessness and desperation that come with wanting to do whatever it takes to save your son, the pride within your church community––these are all human responses. And that is how Mary-Jean Foley’s character was born.

Throw in a lawman and a villain in a coastal town where everyone has a secret and Jacob’s Well spilled out onto the pages!

My Review: 

This is book two of a series and you do need to read book one first, if you ask me. This book starts where the last one ended, which is fantastic if you're reading them back to back. Like the original, there are puzzles and issues to solve, and things aren't always what they seem, and sometimes nothing makes sense at all. However, I find that life can be like that. It's twisty and messy and through it all, there is only One that keeps us together. What can fears really turn you into? What does it take to overcome fears, and or a Jabberwok? I must admit, that I love that poem and enjoyed what this author did with the Jabberwok. Alice and Chess were great characters in this retelling. I enjoyed their growth in the story and the parallels to faith and the spirit realm.

It’s my tagline for The Looking-Glass Illusion, but in truth, I had no idea what those words truly meant until I wrote the ending (and rewrote it several times).

I didn’t fully understand what the looking glass did or did not do—only that Alice had to step through it.

I didn’t know who or what the Jabberwock really was—only that Team Heart had to overcome it.

And I really couldn’t quite figure out this Ivory King character I had introduced in The Wonderland Trials—only that he was real, and that, somehow, the King would reveal himself in the end.

This is my process and it’s rather frustrating not to know what you’re up against. I wish I could outline and have all the answers ahead of time. I wish I knew every intricate detail about my stories. It would certainly make the writing life a lot easier. But I like to think the not-knowing part is God’s way of keeping me humble in all of this. Because I only discover the story and the true underlying theme of it all when He decides to reveal it to me.

So, in the name of revealing things, here are three truths God showed me through the process of writing The Looking-Glass Illusion.

1. Faith is not blind.

I think we can all remember the quote from The Santa Clause with Tim Allen that goes, “Seeing isn’t believing, believing is seeing.” It encompasses the idea that we don’t have to see in order to believe. And while I believe this is true, I also think if we say our faith is blind, we’ve missed the mark.

God gives us every tool we need to base our faith on the truth in the Bible. He doesn’t ask us to walk blindly. He’s given us sight in His Word! And while we don’t know or see everything yet, we do have concrete evidence to stand on that what the Bible says is real.

In The Looking-Glass Illusion, Alice steps through the looking glass not knowing what awaits her on the other side. She does know, however, that The Adventurer’s Almanac her sister gave her has never steered her wrong. It’s guided her along the way, and she holds fast to it as she steps into the unknown.

I didn’t know how this book would end. But I do know that time and time again, God has walked with me through every ending to every book I’ve written. When I hold fast to that truth, I can have faith and the courage to move forward rather than let fear get the better of me. And speaking of fear . . .

1. Fear is a liar. Anyone who’s listened to Christian radio has probably heard the popular song “Fear is a Liar” by Zach Williams. It’s a great song and I think we all need to hear it from time to time. Alice and her team have a multitude of fears to overcome. Chess Shire in particular has to overcome his fear of facing his past. I won’t spoil anything for those who haven’t read it, but the theme of overcoming fear is an overarching one in this duology. Perhaps I could have made it more complex and profound, but it’s really quite simple: Fear is a liar. And the only way to combat lies is to stand on the truth of what we know is real because . . .
2. The fairy tale is real. I am often asked why I choose to write fairy-tale-inspired stories. I like to turn back to my author tagline. While my logo and website design and even my bio have changed over the years, my tagline has remained the same: “Happily Ever After is Never Far Away” This is something I have held to from the onset of my author journey. While fairy tales may be but stories, our walk as Christians is in the living breathing fairy tale of God’s Word. Remember that quote from “The Princess Bride?”“Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles!”

   That line always reminds me of the Bible. Everything we love about fairy tales can be found within the pages of His #1 Best-Selling Book. And it all really happened! The fairy tale is real, and no matter what dragons (or Jabberwocks) we face in this life, we are promised happily ever after (dare I say, Wonderland?) in the next.
