Dr Ronnie Ackerman wakes up in bed alone.  Her boss, Nobel Prize-winner Professor Hasely Stone, and the man she got drunk with the night before, is downstairs in the sauna, brutally murdered. 

Who did this, and why?  

Stone had been working with total dedication on the ultimate cure for all cancers.  Was he killed because he failed, or because he succeeded?

Ronnie panics, clears the house of all traces of her overnight stay, and then sets out on a mission to find out.

My Review: 

This new-to-me author wrote an amazing book, it's a solid debut! I loved the attention to detail and the way Ronnie worked to solve this crime. Just think, a cure for cancer, where all would that lead? Then it's here, in this story. The pace doesn't slow down and it has so many good twists and clues. Ronnie's quest to find out who killed the man in her sauna and why takes us on an amazing journey that will not soon be forgotten. I appreciate the work the author put into this story and the winding road he gave us with Ronnie that invokes deep thinking in this reader.

TV journalist Roger Corke has spent more years than he cares to remember traveling to all parts of the world, making investigative documentaries for series like the BBC's Panorama, Channel 4's Dispatches , and ITV's World In Action and Tonight. It was whilst he was on a filming trip to America that he came up with the plot of Deadly Protocol.

 

"I was talking to a scientist working there who told me that they had made great strides in cancer research over the past few years." says Roger. "I asked him whether that meant a cure for cancer might come soon. His answered floored me. He said 'they may have found a cure for cancer but an lot of people would have a lot to lose if it ever saw the light of day'. Straight away, the plot for a thriller jumped out at me."

 My Review:

This is the third book in a series. You can read this one alone, but I love book series and don't like to miss anything. This book picks up and goes! It goes through so many emotions, all with deep faith worked in and it didn't disappoint with clues, false leads, and a story with deeper roots than I'd anticipated. It's very addictive, this book and the author's writing style. This book is a lovely example of having a murder mystery, with grit, and reality, but without unnecessary scenes that many of us would prefer to bypass. The characters are easy to connect to and the level of understanding of good and evil is well-written.

Does Dark Subject Matter Belong in Inspirational Thrillers?

Spoil alert! Yes.

I am often asked why I write thrillers with darker subject matter and should I? My answer is easy and it’s biblical.

In the Bible, you’ll find all sorts of twisted, dark subject matter. Simply read the book of Judges. God didn’t sanitize the Bible or the people, which include sexual immorality, murder, gruesome violence against women and even cannibalism and child sacrifice (you won’t find child sacrifice in my books, so rest assured). He didn’t approve of these things nor did He condone them, but He also didn’t edit it out for easy reading pleasure. It was important to reveal the dark human condition and what happens apart from God; many heinous things were perpetrated by God’s people as they edged away from their faith into disobedience.

Reading this darker subject matter is hopeful because it reminds us of who we, too, can become apart from God actively in our lives and that God can still accomplish His redemptive purposes in the midst of that darkness. Light shines and is a beacon of hope. Of salvation.

So I don’t shy away from the underbelly of humanity whether it’s through an unbeliever or a believer who has run off the rails and needs brought to repentance and restoration. Light always shines in my books—God rescues, redeems, reconciles and redirects. I’m willing to go there in my stories because I know that it doesn’t stay dark. It doesn’t stay hopeless because we are never without hope.

In The Garden Girls, I wanted to explore that darkness but not with pointy horns and pitchforks. I think we all run from blatant evil that isn’t hiding or masking itself. But what about when evil masquerades as an angel of light? What about when it’s charming, smells good, offers pleasure, and seems harmless? Like a shiny lure that is attractive but when bitten, hooks and binds the unsuspecting victim. Biblical principles and truths weave through the story and in at the heart, it’s a redemptive story. One that takes hurricane force to bring a man to Truth, and choice to bow his heart and yield to sacrificial love.

 My Review:

I have become a fan of this author's work. The dystopian Sci-Fi is a perfect blend for me. It allows for all kinds of flexibility leading to deeper discussions. This is book three in the series and it picks up where book two left off, finally rescuing me from the cliffhanger that I let slide, but didn't leave my mind. This book is fast-paced with non-stop movement that doesn't let up. I love the characters and the world-building, but most of all, the faith worked into this story is fantastic. Elliot and Lara are only alive because of God's grace. Stopping evil, dealing with life's issues, or having life and death ultimations depending on your faith and choices are only part of what happens here. This series and this book are founded on Christ and Christian worldview principles. I can't recommend this series strongly enough.

Dystopian stories remind me of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. In it, Ebenezer Scrooge is heartbroken for Tiny Tim and asks the Ghost of Christmas Present if the boy will live. The ghost, to paraphrase, says that if the shadows of the things present are not altered the child will not live. Dystopian stories show us the shadows of things that if left unaltered, if not safeguarded against, can bring dire consequences. Years ago, I began writing the Tomorrow’s Edge series because I was concerned. Looking at headlines and articles about everything from the latest tech developments to the weakening links in western society’s integrity, I could understand why so many people fear the future. For me, it was fear for a tomorrow that is the fulfillment of every dystopian nightmare to us, but because it is so gradual so innocuous in coming, those in the future living that dystopia won’t even see it.

Our hold on reality is tenuous in the modern digital world—particularly with AI deepfakes, virtual reality, augmented reality, and the metaverse increasingly edging into our daily lives. And when combined with post-modernist philosophy’s denial of objective truth it makes for a serious existential threat. So, I wrote a story about some teens living in the near future where it is very nearly too late to come back from that edge. Teens who are gifted a glimpse of truth and reality and now can’t turn back from pursuing it. I hope it isn’t a stretch already to see that a story like that is layered. The gripping, fast paced surface narrative has beneath it an adjuration and encouragement for those of us who follow Christ to cling to the Truth and the Creator of all reality, no matter what may come. Silent Stars takes that story arc to its conclusion and in writing it I discovered there was an even more potent symbolic meaning to “Tomorrow’s Edge” than us being on the precipice or a dangerous dystopian tomorrow. It was one of the most rewarding discoveries I’ve had as a writer and I hope you enjoy uncovering it as well.
